About
Our Aim
- To preserve and foster an understanding of the ethnic customs, languages, religions, sport and cultures of all individuals, so that they can be shared with the wider community of Taranaki, encouraging and fostering friendship.
- To protect the rights of all individuals regardless of ethnic origin, so that they may enjoy equal opportunities and receive equal protection under the laws of New Zealand.
- To Respect the special status of the Maori people as Tangata Whenua under the treaty of Waitangi.
Our History
The Taranaki Multi-Ethnic Council was inaugurated in June 1994, through the hardwork and vision of our Founding Fathers, with the support of the Department of Internal Affairs. An active executive committee meets regularly to lead our activities and represent our local Ethnic Communities at community and national events. Our current patron is His Worship the Mayor Peter Tennent.
We are one of the 17 ethnic councils in New Zealand currently affiliated to the NZ Federation of Multi-Cultural Councils. We are registered with the New Zealand Charities Commission.
Mission Statement
Building bridges of understanding, encouraging tolerance of all nationalities, guiding all people to cross the bridge of friendship. Our support and understanding awaits you.
